Increasingly strict regulations are accelerating the need to cut emissions and reduce environmental impact. The maritime transportation industry is currently responsible for 3% of the world’s carbon emissions. To counter this, the industry is now being pushed by governments, international regulators, and the wider society to clean up its act.
The IMO have introduced legislation that limit and reduce emissions to air and sea. Starting from January 2023, all vessels above 5 000 GT are rated according to the IMO’s Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), which uses standardised methods to calculate ships’ emissions. Likewise, the EU is drafting plans to include shipping in the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2024. In addition to new legislation, it’s likely that stakeholders, such as banks, insurance companies and investors, will set stricter requirements for operators to improve energy efficiency and lower GHG emissions.
Underwater biofouling can increase fuel consumption by as much as 40%, boosting already high CO₂ emissions. The accumulation of marine life may also cause the spread of invasive aquatic species in environments they’re transported to, negatively affecting biodiversity, ecosystem health and the livelihoods of coastal communities across the globe. The industry must take action to mitigate these marine biosecurity risks before we cause irreversible damage to our seas.

The industry interest in performance management systems to monitor the performance of a fleet – including voyage, hull and propeller, engines, and overall system performance – is growing as operators work to achieve greater efficiencies. Poor hull and propeller performance alone is currently estimated to account for around 19% of the world’s fleet energy cost and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions.
Regular monitoring on factors influencing ship performance can help operators keep track of the vessel’s condition and its performance.
