SOx Scrubber Solutions

Jotun has established a solution towards protecting Marine SO_X Scrubbers from aggressive environment that it goes through. Many of the materials used in these scrubbers are made up of corrosion resistant material like glass reinforced polyesters or high-grade stainless steel but due to costs associated there are many parts which use less corrosion resistant material like mild steel and lower grade stainless steel (254SMO), and these areas need protective coatings to ensure a long operational period without breakdowns. 

Jotun has identified these locations and has provided product solutions which will support customers in protecting their scrubbers. The areas to be protected are as described in the following diagrams.

The current product offerings are based on Jotun’s experience in protecting steel structures against corrosive environment. However, as Jotun seeks to always improve its offering, newer product is in development and will be updated towards this solution.

With regards to coating systems, FMSI needed a coating that would sufficiently protect their scrubbers against the corrosive environment during operations as they aim to build scrubbers that last the life of the ship. FMSI scrubbers were coated with Chemflake Special, selected for its high performance in corrosive environment. The coated scrubbers were in operations for 24 hours for 6 months. The results were zero breakdown in coating system. The coated surfaces also held out better as compared to super duplex steel that was initially thought to be more corrosion resistant then coated steel.

Jotun has always been at the forefront in providing performance coating for corrosive environment. We have had extensive experience in protecting large scaled, land-based SO_X Scrubbers or Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) systems, frequently installed in powerplants that burns fuel to generate energy. Like Marine SO_X Scrubbers, the corrosive environment within this FGD systems requires the correct protective coatings to ensure long lasting performance in order to avoid premature breakdown in coatings.

On top of land based FGD system protection, Jotun also has extensive experience within the marine industry in protecting against aggressive environments, particularly in tank coating. Our Novolac Epoxy system has one of the highest chemical resistance amongst tank coatings in the market known for its protective properties. Using the experience in protecting chemical tanks where proper application is a must, Jotun seeks to maximise its offering towards the protection of marine SO_X Scrubber.
