Performance monitoring
Measuring hull and propeller performance can be complex and challenging for owners and operators. But things are changing due to the ISO 19030 standard. This helps operators to better measure performance and make better and quicker decisions that can help boost performance and save money.
The ISO 19030 standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization in 2016, provides practical, transparent methods for measuring changes in ship-specific hull and propeller performance and came about in response to industry calls for a fair and unbiased method of assessing claims over efficiency gains.
The standard helps quantify how solutions, such as advanced anti-fouling coatings, can contribute hugely to reducing losses caused by poor hull and propulsion performance. It prescribes measurement methodology and defining performance indicators for hull and propeller maintenance, repair and retrofitting activities.
Initiated by Jotun, the standard took more than three years to develop and involved collaboration by over 50 experts from throughout the industry. The standard offers a two-tier methodological approach: ISO 19030-2, the default measurement method, with the most exacting requirements and greatest measurement accuracy; and ISO 19030-3, allowing for ‘alternative methods’ and included in order to increase the applicability of the standard.
The standard is intended for all stakeholders that are striving to apply a rigorous, yet practical way of measuring the changes in hull and propeller performance. It will make it easier for decision makers to make better and quicker decisions. Also, it will also provide much needed transparency for buyers and sellers of technologies and services intended to improve hull and propeller performance. Further, it will make it easy for the same buyers and sellers to enter into performance-based contracts and thereby better align interests with third parties.
In spite of the standard still being relatively new to the industry, it’s attracting a lot of interest as owners and operators work to improve their vessel and fleet performance. If used in the right way, the standard can help improve performance and save significant amounts of money in terms of fuel costs.
The standard will be revised after three years to address improvement areas identified by industry stakeholders.

MSC reaps fuel efficiency gains with Jotun’s Hull Performance Solutions
With almost 500 vessels, MSC has one of the world’s largest fleets of containerships. To help the company reduce bunkering fuel costs and associated CO2 emissions, MSC undertook a comprehensive programme to improve fuel efficiency in 2011. During this period, they worked in close cooperation with Jotun to evaluate hull performance and launch a pilot programme to test the impact of antifouling on speed loss. Jotun’s SeaQuantum X200 was applied to the 8,772 TEU containership MSC Adelaide, delivered from the Sungdong Yard in Korea in 2013.

UASC boosts efficiency of new flagships with Jotun advanced antifouling coatings
The shipping and maritime industries rely on antifouling hull coatings to limit the growth of organisms on the hull that can affect the vessel's performance and durability. These advanced coatings deliver hydrodynamic performance gain, fuel cost and Green House Gas saving.
Of UASC’s eleven vessels to be coated with Jotun's premium antifouling range, eight are 14,500 TEU with Hull Performance Solution (HPS) system and three are 18,800 TEU capacity vessels. Jotun’s solution will help UASC's vessels achieve up to a 15% hydrodynamic performance gain as well as fuel cost savings. This agreement marks the first time Jotun and UASC have worked together on marine antifouling hull coatings.

Eitzen Chemical picks low hanging fruits of energy efficiency solutions by Jotun
"Through several years of measuring our vessel's performance, we recognize that the correct choice of antifouling is one of the low hanging fruits when it comes to increasing our vessel's energy efficiency", says Mr Rasmus Kjaer, General Manager Technical for Siteam Discoverer at Eitzen Chemical. "Eitzen Chemical is aware of its environmental responsibility and we strive to comply with and maintain high standards in order to reduce the environmental impact from our operations. We are therefore excited to see the first hull performance measurements on the two vessels and the effect the coating has had on their fuel consumption, emission and operating efficiency", Mr Kjaer adds.

MEPC 63-4-8: "A transparent and reliable hull and propeller performance standard"
This submission to MEPC 63 by the Clean Shipping Coalition estimates the potential for GHG emissions reductions related to improvements in Hull and Propeller Performance to be between 7 and 10% across the world fleet (would account for around half of IMO's GHG emissions reduction target for 2020) and calls for the MEPC's involvement in seeing to the establishment of a transparent and reliable standard for measuring Hull and Propeller Performance. Jotun HPS contributed to the development of the submission and also took part (as co-presenter) at a side-event where the submission was presented in greater detail to interested delegates.
Overall the submission was well received and we will continue to support work on a global standard.
The illusion of fuel savings - an urgent need for improved transparency in marine hull coatings
The general market trend is that a given vessels fuel consumption will gradually increase throughout the docking cycle – even with the best antifoulings/FRC’s in the market. Knowing this, why do we even talk about fuel savings in the same sentences as paint products applied to the vessels hull?
The answer to the above is as simple as it is complex – “fuel savings” sends positive buying signals while “reduced loss in performance” will easily be perceived as negative. The “fuel saving” focus has released a number of marketing efforts creating an “illusion of fuel savings” related to the application of specific underwater hull coatings. Jotun has taken an active position to refocus on true hull performance through a transparent method that allows for hull performance assessment through onboard automatically logged data.
Vessel operation under fixed RPM and increased frictional resistance - Why is there an increase in power demand?
Even when operating under fixed RPM settings hull fouling will affect the fuel bill – counter to the intuition of many. This article sets out to explain the reason behind this observation based on a real life example.
On the origin of the 1:3 rule for % speed deviation and % power deviation
A well-known rule of thumb in the shipping industry states that a 1% speed loss is equivalent to a 3% increase in power demand if the vessel in question compensates for the speed loss by increasing engine power. This technical note points to the origin of this 1:3 rule.
