Ummi Junid is a contemporary Batik artist from Malaysia.
She believes in the strong bond between people and material. With this in mind, Ummi reinterpreted the beautiful traditional Malay motif working with natural dyes and waste material.
Creating Batik gives Ummi a sense of tranquility as she contemplates the role of nature and people in the world and her craft.
“Crafters are more than just makers. Craft-making embodies a focused relationship with your materials. You need to be able to understand the environment of the material so you can create a new form.”
