At Jotun, we are constantly looking for realistic and reliable ways of testing our products to make sure they are fit for their purpose and able to withstand the elements, protecting valuable assets. In 2016 we opened a test station at Svalbard, to be able to better understand all aspects of the in-service performance of our coatings.
Of the world’s undiscovered oil and gas resources, a lot is held in the arctic region. Recent years has seen significant growth in interest from the international oil and gas industry to develop these resources. At the same time, there is a common understanding that it is vital to protect the extremely fragile arctic environment. The Svalbard test station was developed with these things in mind; testing paints and coatings for service in cold climates while minimizing the environmental impact.
Material selection for these projects has predominantly been based on accelerated lab tests or on experience from existing projects.
The test station was opened in 2016, and the main purpose is to get a better understanding of how the unique arctic climate affects corrosion rates and how our coatings are performing in these surroundings. We will investigate and map correlations between accelerated laboratory tests and in-service performance, to gain knowledge and experience enabling us to tailor-make solutions for the protection of assets in arctic climates.
We will continuously develop the test station, and share our learnings with our customers.
Svalbard is an island located in the arctic ocean, north of mainland Europe. It has an arctic climate, which is why we have chosen to open a test station here, in collaboration with the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS).
