Questions about Exterior protection

The exterior of my house needs painting. What do you recommend?
The Jotashield range is extremely popular as a complete series of exterior paints, offering superior weather and UV resistance. This 100% acrylic range covers all the requirements from primer to topcoats. You also get an exciting choice of textures, colours and finishes!
For exteriors, is it possible to get a silky or glossy finish?
Certainly! The Jotun Jotashield Topcoats are available in both Glossy and Silky finish. Both are, of course, extremely durable!
There are defects in the external plaster surfaces. What can I use?
External surface defects can be covered using textured materials with random patterns. A glossy finish is also preferred as it is easy to keep dust-free. We recommend Jotashield SuperDurable (acrylic texotile) or Jotashield TopCoat Silk (epoxy texotile).
Is there a painting method to reduce heat absorption?
Yes, there is! Jotashield Thermo has been specially formulated for exactly this purpose. It’s a pure acrylic exterior coating proven to reduce the heat absorbed by walls. Special glass beads incorporated in to the paint deflect the sun’s heat, thus cooling the interiors and saving energy.
Can I over coat Jotashield Thermo with any colour from Jotashield 07 or 80?
Jotashield Thermo has special glass beads that deflect the sun. With the application of an overcoat these beads get covered reducing their effectiveness, so it’s not recommended.
Can I use Oil paint for painting exterior concrete surface?
Oil paint is not recommended on concrete exteriors, as there may occur a reaction with the alkalinity in the plaster/concrete, due to high humidity and temperature.
Can I apply texture over texture?
Technically, it is possible, although there is a danger of the paint films becoming too thick, resulting in poor adhesion. It is, generally, advisable to use a smooth topcoat if applying over heavy textured paints.
Why are 100% pure acrylic paints more durable than emulsions?
Laboratory results show that it is easier to remove stains from high quality 100% pure acrylic paints than from ordinary emulsion paints, as they contain greater amounts of pigments and binders and a higher ratio of binder to pigment than ordinary paints.
The higher level of binder allows the 100% acrylic to form a film that is less porous. This film has fewer "pockets" where dirt and stain can lodge. If a 100% pure acrylic paint becomes dirty or stained, the lower porosity of the film makes it easier to clean, since the dirt and contaminants stay near the surface where the cleaning action has more effect. Also, 100% acrylics have good colour and gloss retention properties.
Why should I overcoat textures on exterior surfaces?
To prevent dirt pick-up and prolong the life span of the painted substrate.
Recommendations:
Previous Paint is Acrylic based - Jotashield: For textured surfaces overcoat with 100% pure acrylic coatings (Jotashield) that has superior properties in terms of UV resistance, chloride resistance, gloss and colour retention.
• Previous Paint is Epoxy: Use two pack polyurethane topcoats like Jotashield TopCoat Silk should provide optimum protection.
Can I use emulsion paint over alkyd (oil) paint?
Normally, enamel paints are not over coated with emulsion based products. However, if this is necessary, sand the surface thoroughly to create a good adhesion and apply a coat of Fenomastic / Bengalac Matt, before applying emulsion paint..
