Jotun has research and development laboratories world wide to match market requirements

Norway

The R&D Centre in Norway is located in Sandefjord.

Our Research and Development centre is located in Sandefjord Norway, and around 200 people are working in R&D on a daily basis. To ensure closeness to customers and markets, we also have several regional laboratories. This enables us to address global customer needs, but also meet local specifications or special requirements in markets where we are present.

In the R&D Centre in Norway we develop technology platforms and global formulations for all the four main product segments. The technologies will often be modified in the regional laboratories to satisfy local needs. The central R&D in Norway is also actively supporting and controlling the development work done in the regional labs.

A large group in the R&D centre works with the development of antifouling for ships. To keep our leading position in the marine market, we have to develop and keep the control of both the antifouling polymer and the final coating, Both very technology demanding., Other strategic important technologies developed in the Central lab are polymers for decorative paints and tinting colorants for Jotun Muliticolor systems.

To further support the product development both in Sandefjord and in the regions, the R&D center is housing several expert teams within the fields of:

  • Pigment and colour technology
  • Chemical analysis
  • Biology
  • HSE issues
  • Product testing

United Kingdom

The new, dedicated intumescent R&D facility opened in 2017 and intends to support and develop the two main intumescent product ranges of Jotachar and Steelmaster and the insulation product, Jotatherm TB550. The lab has a global focus and works closely with the already established intumescent R&D facility in Dubai, UAE, the central functions in Norway and selected regional labs.

The aim is to have a team of up to 12 specialist chemists by 2020. There are two large fire testing furnaces and the application facilities are designed to house specimens of up to five meters in length. In addition to fire testing capabilities, resistance to cryogenic spills and environmental durability testing to all key standards and down to temperatures of -40°C is a focus.

The presence in UK will allow access to the extensive 3rd party testing facilities, classification societies and safety specialists.
