Chemical policy in Jotun

Jotun belongs to the chemical industry being a global manufacturer and supplier of paints and powder coatings and acknowledges its responsibility with respect to chemical management.

Use of chemicals may represent a risk to Jotun’s employees (operators and inspectors), non-professional and professional customers and to the environment. Jotun therefore needs to identify chemical risks and manage them in a responsible way.

Whenever there is new information on existing chemicals, or a new chemical is being introduced, the HSE, technical and economical aspects of the chemical need to be assessed.

Regulations

If use of a chemical is regulated (restricted or prohibited) by national or international governments Jotun and its products shall be in compliance with these regulations.

Jotun's chemical policy goes beyond what is required by legislation.

Health, Safety and the Environment (HSE)

Chemicals with less hazardous properties are preferred over more hazardous chemicals unless this causes significant technical or economical disadvantages (substitution principle). Although risk is what really matters (i.e. the probability that a hazard is expressed), R&D plays a vital role in reducing risk by simply choosing the least hazardous chemicals when developing new products.

Any use of carcinogens, mutagens, reprotoxins, very potent corrosives and/ or sensitisers and/ or chemicals that have high acute toxicity should be avoided whenever possible. Chemicals that are defined as PBT (persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic) or vPvB (very persistent, very bioaccumulative), should also be avoided. In order to reduce impact of VOC (volatile organic compounds), products containing as low as possible of these compounds should be developed.

Technical

The products shall meet the technical demands of the customer. The technical properties of the products shall have as good as or better performances than Jotun’s main competitors on the market.

Economy

Evaluation of contribution margin and market demand should be done (preferably in collaboration with innovation steering board or marketing department).

Suppliers should be evaluated in collaboration with the Purchasing department (prices, supply security, locations, HSE conduct, knowledge and support).
